I saw the movie, "He's Just Not That Into You" last night. It was amazing. It was hilarious, clever, sad and brutally honest. Just what I needed.
What is most amusing about this film is when looking at the big "dating" picture. It really is a mess. Why are marriages, dating and relationships so difficult? How come it is so rare to actually find two individuals who are compatible for life? You would think with all the damn people in the world that this would be an easy task. Yet most relationships fail in one way or another and many people end up living unhappily with their partner.
My problem has never been with dating. I have dated a lot and know all the tricks. I don't follow any rules, but have memorized them all by heart. It's easy and simple for me to understand and deal with. Relationships, however, are where I struggle. I can't seem to find a partner who just fits me. It seems like the ones who understand me and know what it takes to make me happy seem to be the ones who are lacking in many other areas. I dated a guy who always knew exactly what to say at the exact times. This was why we ended up dating for as long as we did. Because in reality, his personality sucked. He was manipulative, sneaky and a liar. But he sure knew how to make me feel special, so we stayed together...much longer than necessary.
And then there is my recent ex. I am more head over heels in love with him than I ever thought possible. But we fight all the time. He does not understand what I need in a relationship in the least bit. I found myself changing everything possible about myself in order to make our relationship work, whereas he has not pulled his weight at all. When we fight he controls the situation, and makes me feel as though my feelings are not important. I feel like he loves me, but not enough. He has the perfect personality of a guy that I would want to end up with, however he just cannot seem to wrap his brain around the hurtful things he does.
Dating is hard, relationships are tiresome and marriage seems more doomed than ever. If only we all were not longing for that one companion to share your life with-MAYBE-we would all be happier alone.
